Check out the photos I took at site IV when stationed there. One of the shots is the day Site IV was closed. The site commander asked me to take the shot for historial records.

A very interesting web site. Thanks for putting it together. I need to spend more time on it. I was the 38TMW/DO at Wuescheim from 1988-1990. It's too bad Wuescheim isn't better maintained. We had a great unit there in the 80s serving under Col Dennis Hummel and Col Al Myers. It makes me sad to see the base in such bad shape.

Dear Sir,
I lived in Gruenstadt from 1996 to 1998. When walking up the hill with my wife, I saw this fenced in area and all that's left was concrete slabs. The Autobahn intersections near Neuleiningen made me courious of what once was going on up there. These fotos and the information on your site are amazing. They transport and breathe the spirit and the mind set of the cold war. It is amazing (and scary) to see that during this period the opposing nations stood there undisguised and the arm with the sword (missile) was already raised, ready to strike immediately.
When I see the young dudes operating these "hell bringing" devices, it seems like a miracle that no one tried them out, as everyone knows that young people like to try out everything. Thank you for serving and preserving freedom and peace by NOT doing what you have been trained for. I am 45 years old, so I wasn't even born at the time most of this happened. When I served in the German military, it was during the end of the cold war (1984-1989) Still I feel that this aera has been forgotten all too soon and the younger folks have no clue what cold war meant. Just as I could not understand what our grand fathers were talking about when they were talking about WW2.
P.S From what I know there were NIKE HERCULES and later PATRIOT missiles stationed on the other side of Gruenstadt above Asselheim. The site is abandoned now, but is still in good condition as far as I can say looking down on it with GOOGLE maps.

In September '08 I finished just over 3 years at Sembach, at the 21st Operational Weather Squadron, the theater weather resource. Not much is left of Sembach, the flight line has been closed for almost 11 years. I loved Germany and am very interested in Cold War history; learning about the missile sites is so interesting. We lived in Mehlingerhof, and picked up snippets about the area's past. I figured there were all sorts of little installations hidden about, your site confirms this and has taught me a lot. Thanks!

Great site! Thanks for saving and sharing this important part of history. I met Fred Horkey in 1988 in Dayton, OH (at an IPMS National Convention) and corresponded with him while researching the TM 76 A/B for a model building project. Sure wish I had all this information available then! I have the book on order and can't wait to read it.

I was stationed at Site V (Hahn) from 1962-1965 as a flight control tech on the Mace. This site brought back fond memories of Lowrey, Orlando, and Hahn.
