We were lucky who came after you, there was very little issue of what was off-limits or not, but then that gave us a lot more time, places, and latitude to get ourselves in drinking trouble. [grin]

Hi Stan, I know what you mean about wine drinking, I was the same. I remember one night I was at an off limit bar sitting on the floor with my legs crossed when I was introduced to a German bock beer, when I tipped the third can of beer to my lips, I never came back. I went over backwards and pastout and I didn't uncross my legs. I woke up the next morning in my bunk not knowing how I got there, thanks to my buddies.

Roy, I don't remember Lucky Wine and I wasn't a wine drinker normally. I stayed with rum and bourbon drinks and the wild wine night was one of a kind for me, which made it all the more unforgettable. I was a pretty "innocent" kid before I got into the Air Force and even at Lowry, I hadn't ever drank at all, not until I got to Kadena but boy did I learn how, there! But even to this day, except for that one night, I never really got into wine. Actually, the first time I was drunk was at a squadron party that hired out one of the clubs in Koza and the booze was on the house. A couple of stories to tell from that night!

How are things at Kadena today?

by Roy Schutt from New York State on 19.06.2010 22:18
I was a photographer while on the Rock, starting at Naha, then to Kadena. I think I hit every bar from Naha to Koza. The times that I remember was great while I was there. I was there when the island was controlled by the military police, 1957 to 1958. Yes I can remember the 25cent fried rice at the EM club. When I was there I was 18 and the drinking age on base was 21, so my buddy, who was 21 would pass me his ID card when we were asked for proof and I would get my beer, after all we Americans all look a like.

Hey Stan did you ever drink the Lucky Wine, that will blow your mine also.

I've got more but I'll let some of the other guys jump in and play. I'd also like to hear tales about action at the sites. I left shortly before the shutdown and I'd be interested in stories about that time frame as well as when we were live.

thanks, stan. that's what we need.

Okay, here's a story. After a long night in Koza, drinking god knows what all, I discovered Akadama wine, (not sure of the spelling.) To make a long story short, when I couldn't stand up any more, I actually crawled all the way back to the barracks from town, slipping out around the bushes at the entry gate where I wasn't seen, and of course, when I took a drink of water the next morning, I was sick as a dog all over again. Anybody had that stuff? It came in what I describe as ketchup sized bottles.

Some corrections after thinking back. I was on Crew 39, and it was Capt Usui, not Matsui, a great guy, replaced by Dave Smith, also a great guy to work for. Would enjoy hearing from anybody who worked in any position at the 498th during that time.

I was a Mech 5 from about January of '68 to July of '69. I can't even remember my crew's number but we were at Site 4. My original Cdr was Capt. Matsui, by chief was Jim Story, my Mech 1 Phil Boyko, Mech 3 Fred White, Mech 4 was Tom Hill. Lot of interesting stories, and I see a good number of names here that I remember. Left just before they were shutting it all down.

I arrived on Okinawa October 1964 and departed Feb 1966. Was initially assigned to the 874th TMS under the 498th TMG. I served as a Mech 2 (Flight Controls) under Capt. Eugene Walters on Launch Crew 32 at Site 3. Was later cross trained and reassigned as a Mech 1 (Guidance & Launch)on Lt. Richard Mellicks crew 33 at Site 4. Have great memories working in the hole. I was so happy to move from the duties of a Mech 2, working in the HOT launch bay and having to run the stairs to the launch bay wearing the fire fighting suit with the Scott Air Pack on your back during Fire Drills, to an air conditioned LCC running the LAGG. Happy to have had the priviledge to serve during the Cold War and hopefully helped to prevent it from escalating to a HOT war. If you have not yet seen them, there is a TAC Missileers site at http://www.tacmissileers.org - Check it out.. Also the Association of Air Force Missileers site at http://www.afmissileers.org.. Interesting sites

I signed the old book but changed emails and more. Worked in GEMS, ECO and Maintenance Control on two tours from 1960 -1969. Spent most of my off duty time diving with the Reef Rovers and teaching diving. Saw Jim Hicks awhile back but out of touch now. Still touch base with Ruiz, McLain, Denman and a few others now and agin.
Good site and glad to see the photos and all.
